Introduced in 1976 the E24 6-Series was a replacement for the E9 Coupe, now one of the more collectable BMW's ever produced, and was the first generation for BMW's new Grand Tourer. Built and based around the BMW 5 Series platform the E24 took some styling cues from the E9, but with a addition of a B Pillar. Production would cease in 1989 for the E24, with the 6-Series not making a return until the early 2000's. During the 12 year production time the E24 would see a number of both minor and major updates, and the 635CSI introduction to the model line in 1978. In 1982 the E24 changed platforms over from the previous E12 to the new and improved E28, and with this change also saw a major update to the rest over the car including an array of interior and exterior upgrades as well as new suspension and braking updates and a better rust prevention setup. With constantly updating emission regulations 1987 saw the introduction of a new power-plant in the 635CSI with a higher compression M30B35 with catalytic converters now fitted, giving a boost in performance up to 162kw.
This car, built in June 1981, was purchased new in South Africa in November 1982 (the original receipt from the dealer, Glendower BMW in Edenvale is in the file) - registered to Mrs. Lilian Karney. The current vendor is the fourth owner since new. The 635CSI carries a full logbook and receipted service history from that time, together with an original new car sales brochure and an original catalogue showing available colour and trim options. The car was imported to Australia in Nov. 1988 by Mrs. Karney and registered in NSW at her address in Castle Cove, Sydney with number plate ABH92L.
Sold to Phillip Ming-Lai (believed to be a dealer) and then to Rick Graf in July 1974 (who apparently spent over $32,000 during 5 years on maintenance & repairs - receipts are in the file). He then sold it to John Plehn of Cremorne Point in September 2000 who got the plates BM6351 which are on the car of which this registration expires December 2024.
The current owner bought the car in November 2010. The suspension was rebuilt in 2010, and aftermarket rims replaced with the correct rims from a donor car. New exhaust in 2019. In 2022 a period correct Continental radio (with Bluetooth) was fitted, and new speakers. New headlights - to original spec - were fitted. Also tailor made custom car mats from Coco Mats in the USA. New tyres fitted in 2024. All receipts are in the file. The car was part of the Owner’s BMW collection, has always been garaged and very rarely driven in inclement weather.
This 635CSI provides an incredible chance to own an true German Grand Tourer and a quickly appreciating BMW asset.
