After the massive success of the Mustang in the US, Ford in Europe designed its own sports coupe using most of the drive-line from the already popular Cortina. Ford Australia assembled Capris at Homebush in Sydney and dropped the 1600 GT in February 1970 but continued to offer a virtually identical XL until local production ceased in November 1972. The Capri was a solid motorsport competitor too, with significant success in both rally and track racing. 

This rare and ideal automatic 1600 XL is ready for restoration and indicates 52,619 miles traveled. Although not presented as such now this example was well spec'd from the factory as per the decode below. The Capri seems complete less a passenger seat missing, and overall is relatively solid with most of the rust being in the lower damper areas. The car has sat on a rural property for some time in west NSW, but will still require work throughout to restore. Examples are few and far between to find these days, making this an ideal base for a factory style restoration or base for a street machine.
